McCain talks ethanol, gas tax relief, makes $700K

July 17, 2008 By Matt Kelley

Republican presidential candidate John McCain talked about a touchy subject during his stop in Nebraska last night. Speaking in Ashland, McCain said ethanol is an important part of lessening America’s dependence on foreign oil, but says he does not support subsidies for the industry, which he acknowledged puts up hurdles for him in farm states.

McCain pushed his plan to suspend the federal gas tax during his tour of an Omaha trucking company, Werner Enterprises, saying he’d like to see a summer suspension of the gas tax to help drivers cope with surging fuel prices.

McCain’s campaign warchest surged with his fundraising stop in Nebraska, which netted him a reported $700,000.
