The woman who lived in a house with 119 cats, a rabbit and a raccoon is speaking about what happened Wednesday at her home near 18th and Manderson in Omaha. Humane Society officials took the animals from her home. Hanne Kaea (Hanna Kay-E-ah) defends her actions saying she is an animal lover and wanted these strays and abandoned animals to have a home.
“Most of them were stray animals, almost seven years ago and were dying. I brought to Carter Lake where I was living at the time. I had them all spayed and neutered. The animals were all take care of and believe me, my animals always had the best of food.”
Kaea says she never intended on having this many animals.
“I don’t need 100 cats. I never did. I never tried for 100 cats.”
Kaea says she was taking care of the baby raccoon because it was abandoned as well.
“The raccoon was lying on my next door neighbor’s doorstep. They had a fit about it. They came slamming on my door saying do something about this animal. So, I got this animal in a kennel, brought the animal over here and tried to get wildlife rescue but apparently after the storm, wildlife rescue have been very, very busy.”
Council Bluffs authorities say they were called to a store after management suspected Kaea of stealing cat food and that she smelled of urine. Kaea says she did not steal anything. This isn’t the first time that animals were removed from Kaea’s home.
