Kearney High teammates Rustin Dring and Brett Maher connected on a 68-yard halfback pass on the first play from scrimmage and that was the only touchdown in the South’s 7-3 win over the North at Memorial Stadium.
The North responded with a field goal on their opening drive and after that the 50th Shrine game was dominated by defense.
It was the lowest scoring Shrine Bowl since 1992, when the South also took a 7-3 win over the North.
The touchdown came on a trick play which followed a non-trick play on the opening kick, when the South faked three handoffs before Dring ran the ball to the 32 yard line. On the first play, after taking the toss Dring, set up and hit Maher down the sideline for the score. The North team then put together a 12 play, 59 yard drive that finished with a 32 yard field goal from Bobby Shults.
