Over a dozen supporters of thoroughbred horse racing addressed a state legislative committee about the need for a new Lincoln racetrack and complex to keep the sport alive and strong. The estimated cost for a project like this would be in the $50 million neighborhood.
Of course few details were given as to how this project would be paid for. The track at State Fair Park is closing in 2011 and the new track would be a replacement. Interest in thoroughbred racing has declined since casino gambling has come into the picture back in the mid-90’s over in Iowa.
The group that’s leading the charge is called Vision 2015, and their spokesman Kent Seacrest said it was too early for details to be given on how a project like this would be paid for, but Seacrest said it typically starts with the city helping on the infrastructure and the county kicking in.
