The Husker State’s only turkey processing plant is planning to close down shortly after Thanksgiving. The Nebraska Turkey Growers Cooperative in Gibbon currently employs 225 full-time workers and it’s unclear if they’ll have jobs next year.
Plant officials say they’ll continue operations into December, when they usually take a three-week break for maintenance and renovations, but that break is being extended indefinitely. It’s hoped production can resume in the spring but at this point, nothing is sure. Officials blame rising costs, mostly for feed and fuel.
The plant processes 20,000 turkeys a day and is Gibbon’s second-largest employer behind Gibbon Packing.
