Workplace deaths are up in Nebraska. In 2007, 63 people died on the job. That’s compared with 56 workplace deaths in 2006 and only 37 in 2005. Economist Bruce Laporte reviewed the numbers.
“It’s a mixed bag and it’s really hard to pinpoint the reason why they’re up and down, it could be isolated events that lead to the increases.”
Laporte says accidents on the farm are a major contributor to deaths in the workplace. The tragic shootings at Westroads mall in Omaha are also a contributing factor to this year’s high number.
