An 11 year old Florida boy was abandoned Wednesday at an Omaha hospital using the state’s much-criticized safe haven law. The boy is the 31st child abandoned in the state under the law since it went into effect in July. A spokesman for the state Department of Health and Human Services says the boy’s father drove all the way from Miami and left him at Boys Town National Research Hospital. On Friday, Nebraska lawmakers are scheduled to meet in special session to change the law so it applies only to newborns, instead of all children, as it does now.
