2012 Olympic swim trials will not be in Omaha

December 3, 2008 By Nebraska Radio Network Contributor

“We kind of reached an impasse where we couldn’t do much more about it.”

The 2012 Olympic Swim Trials will not be held in Omaha. Harley Schrager with the Omaha Sports Commission says that attempts to get the NCAA to move the dates for the College World Series for that year only were unsuccessful.

“They also felt that keeping the baseball players on campus for an extra week would be costly and would create some kind of a hardship for those athletes.”

The Omaha Sports Commission had sought to have the series start on June 23rd that year. It also would have meant the final game of the championship series could have been played on the 4th of July.

“All we were asking for a one-time concession by the NCAA.”

Harvey says even with that huge perk, they were unable to persuade the N-C-A-A to move the dates of the series.

“It was very disheartening for them to come back to us and tells they could not do it.”

The N-C-A-A stated that a change of dates would have meant that ball players in the C-W-S would be sitting around a week before the start of the championship game. They also cited concerns over t-v rights as well as available space at the Qwest Center.
