The Hastings College women’s basketball team did something nobody has been able to do all season, beat Shawnee State University. The Lady Broncos upset #1 seed and #2 nationally ranked Shawnee State 77-69 in overtime to advance to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa at the Tyson Events Center.
Shawnee State entered the game with a perfect 31-0 record and were unable to continue their undefeated season as Hastings would win 77-69 in overtime. The Lady Broncos found themselves down by one point at halftime 31-30. Hastings would fire back in the second half to increase their lead to as many as five. The Lady Broncos would have a chance to win it in regulation as Kim Faimon’s drive to the basket was denied as time expired. Hastings would ice the game down the stretch as they were 30-38 from the free-throw line. The Lady Broncos were 39% from the floor and 26% from 3-point range.
Hastings was led by Lindsay Ducey with her second consecutive double-double at the National Tournament as she finished with 28 points and 11 rebounds. Ducey was 7 of 12 from the floor and 16 of 18 from the free-throw line. Heather McKeon also tallied a double-double as she had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Rachel Isherwood was 5 of 7 from the floor and finished with 12 points while snagging 5 rebounds. Kim Faimon was also in double figures as she ended with 11 points, 4 assists and 6 rebounds. Kay Broekemeier dished out a team high 6 assists while grabbing 7 rebounds.
Hastings improves to 25-7 on the season and will face GPAC foe Concordia Univ. (Neb.) in the quarterfinals of the National Tournament on Saturday, March 14 in Sioux City, Iowa. The game is set to tip off at 1 p.m. in the Tyson Events Center.
