Hastings man charged in Shelton-area wildfire

March 18, 2009 By Matt Kelley

A south-central Nebraska man is ticketed after sparking this week’s wildfire that scorched a camping spot and left several firefighters hurt.

Between 40 and 50 firefighters responded to Monday’s grassfire near Shelton on an island between the north and south channels of the Platte River. The fire was contained on the island and blackened ten to 20 acres.

The Buffalo County Sheriff says the blaze was eventually traced to 20-year-old Elliott Kruger of Hastings, who started a campfire nearby — a fire that quickly got out of control. Kruger was cited on suspicion of burning without a permit.

None of the firefighters who were hurt had serious injuries.
