A measure that would add an exemption to the statewide smoking ban illicited strong reaction on the floor of the legislature Friday. Legislators debated a bill that would allow smoking in bars where at least fifteen percent of the revenue comes from tobacco sales.
Bill sponsor Senator Scott Lautenbaugh says it is meant to allow smoking in cigar bars. Opponents, however, fear it would carve a much larger exemption because the bill mentions sales of all types of tobacco, not just cigars.
Lawmakers did not vote on the measure, and opponents say they may try to kill it with a fillibuster.
