A Norfolk woman — said to the oldest person in Nebraska — observed her 109th birthday over weekend.
Leona Gleed also has a couple of other milestones to her credit. She is likely the world’s oldest living singleton twin AND also is the sixth-oldest twin in world history, according to the website run by the Gerontology Research Group.
Gleed lives at the Meadows residential retirement complex in Norfolk — as do her daughter and son-in-law, Celesta and Ralph Cooke. Gleed was born March 28th, 1900, near Page in Holt County. She lived on a ranch west of Chambers with her husband and family for many years. Gleed lived in O’Neill after her husband died in 1963 and then moved to Norfolk in 1992.
The Meadows celebrated her 109th birthday with an open house late last week. In June of last year, Gleed was honored for being the oldest member in the world of the Rebekah Lodge for her 85-year membership.
