During the first day of budget debates, Legislators spent the greatest amount of time criticizing the management of the Beatrice State Developmental Center. Senators advanced a bill providing a seven million dollar appropriation for the center.
“They cut pennies to look good in the short term and the devastating consequenses of that are just now becoming apparent, it’s like not maintaining your bridges or not fixing your roads. you look good for a couple of years until the bills come due because the bridges fail and the roads crumble, only these are human beings.”
Senator Tom White of Omaha reminded Senators of all the things they couldhave funded with the 25 million dollars in state aid that was lost for the center.
