The Lincoln Saltdogs placed third baseman Juan Richardson on the inactive list Wednesday, after learning that the veteran had suffered a fractured ankle. Lincoln also released right-handed pitcher Khalid Afify.
Richardson, who hit 16 home runs in 2008 for Class AA Northwest Arkansas, was signed by the Saltdogs in April. Lincoln expected him to hit in the cleanup spot this season, but he suffered the ankle injury in just the third game of the season. Playing in the second game of a doubleheader May 16 at Wichita, Richardson fell awkwardly while attempting to field a ground ball on the AstroTurf infield at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The initial X-ray did not show the fracture, and it was hoped that Richardson could return to the team by the end of May. However, an MRI this week revealed the break, and the veteran is now out for the rest of the season. Richardson had two hits and an RBI in his five at-bats.
Afify, a rookie from Binghamton, NY, was released to get Lincoln’s roster down to the 22-man limit ahead of Thursday’s deadline. He appeared in four games for the Saltdogs this season, posting no record and a 10.80 ERA in 6.2 innings pitched.
The Saltdogs return to the field on Friday, when they head to Sioux Falls to meet the defending league champions for the first time in 2009.
