Authorities say a herd of beef cattle has tested positive for tuberculosis in north-central Nebraska’s Rock County. After extensive testing and the discovery of the disease, State Veterinarian Dr. Dennis Hughes says the herd was quarantined and is undergoing more testing.
Dr. Hughes says it appears Nebraska will lose its TB-free status, though many other states are having trouble with outbreaks of the disease.
Hughes says it is a different strain of bovine TB and it is not related to recent findings of TB in elk herds. He would not say how many of the cattle have tested positive or how many cattle were in the herd in question, only that it’s a fairly large herd.
