UNC’s Alex White and Arizona State’s Josh Spence locked up in a great pitcher’s matchup Sunday afternoon, but the game would be decided in extra innings at the College World Series with a 5-2, win for the Sun Devils.
ASU broke through against the Tar Heel bullpen in the top of the 10th. Colin Bates relieved White and retired MacPhee on a pop up to start the inning before allowing a single to Maggi. After Brian Moran relieved Bates, Kipnis hit a fly ball to right that Gore dropped, setting up a single that drove in a run followed by a three-run opposite field homer to make it 5-1 by Kole Calhoun. UNC would add a run in their half of the inning.
ASU’s Spence allowed just one run in seven innings of work, throwing 122 pitches (77 for strikes) and allowing eight hits and three walks.
UNC’s White threw 87 of his 131 pitches for strikes, and got out of jams in the first and fifth innings to keep the Sun Devils off the board and keep it a 1-1 game for nine innings.
Arizona State will play Texas Tuesday evening. UNC will play Southern Miss in the loser’s bracket.
