The Lincoln Saltdogs brought their hitting shoes to Fort Worth on Tuesday, beating the Cats 9-4 at LaGrave Field. The Saltdogs pounded out 17 hits, improving to 11-19 on the season.
Josh Burrus started the game on the right note for Lincoln, leading off the game with his fourth home run of the season. Burrus added a second homer in the eighth inning, a two-run shot that gave the Saltdogs some much-needed insurance runs in the top of the eighth. The Dogs’ offensive outburst supported a solid start by lefty Zac Cline, who allowed three runs on seven hits over his six-plus innings of work in his first start of the season.
Lincoln plated three runs in the first, with Pichi Balet’s 2-run double adding to the Burrus home run. The Saltdogs added two more runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Shea McFeely and Deacon Burns. Fort Worth hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth to pull within 5-2, and plated two more in the seventh to cut Lincoln’s lead to one. Reliever Matt Reilly came on to end the Cats’ threat with two runners in scoring position, however, and the Dogs broke the game open with four runs in the eighth. Burns hit an RBI double, Burrus had his second homer, and Phil Hawke added an RBI double for the final margin.
Burrus ended the night 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Hawke and Balet each had three hits for Lincoln, while Machado, McFeely, Burns and Shawn McGill all had two hits apiece.
The two teams play game two of their three-game series Wednesday night at 7:05pm. Lefty Jonathan Figueroa will make the start for Lincoln.
