ASU’s Kole Calhoun went 2-for-3 with six RBI and Arizona State rallied to a 12-5 victory over North Carolina before a sellout crowd of 25,001 Thursday evening at Rosenblatt Stadium. Thursday night’s crowd pushes the 2009 CWS attendance total to 228,209 in just 10 games (average of 22,821).
The Sun Devils, improve to 7-1 in the NCAA Tournament, 51-13 on the season and will meet top-seeded Texas on Friday at 6 p.m. CT where they must beat Texas Friday and Saturday to advance to the finals.
Arizona State scored 12 runs after North Carolina jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning. The Sun Devils gave 25th year head coach Pat Murphy his 1,000 career win.
Five consecutive batters reached base with one out in the Arizona State fifth. Shortstop Drew Maggi reached on a fielder’s choice before center fielder Jason Kipnis and catcher Carlos Ramirez walked to load the bases ahead of Calhoun who cleared the bases for his third home run at Rosenblatt.
