Sunday liquor sales may soon become a reality in Kearney. City leaders say the current rules put the owners of the city’s convenience and liquor stores at a competitive disadvantage.
They say if they Sunday alcohol sales are allowed, it would help the city’s businesses better compete with other merchants just outside of town that already sell on Sundays. The Kearney City Council will consider making the change at its meeting Tuesday night.
Opponents of the plan include Project Extra Mile, which fights underage drinking and wants Kearney leaders to consider public-health consequences, not just the ringing of cash registers.
