An arbitrator has decided that Nebraska owes Kansas 10-thousand dollars for overuse of water from the Republican River. The recommendation is just a small fraction of Kansas’ original claim asking for $72 million dollars. Attorney General Jon Bruning says Nebraska is pleased, but realizes this decision isn’t the end of the line.
“Nebraska remains committed to resolving compact issues. We’re proud of the steps taken by the NRD’s to reach compliance and know we have to do even better in water short years. We’ll work with the NRD’s to address concerns raised by the arbitraitor about our performance”
The arbirtator’s recommendation is not legally binding thought, and the dispute will likely end up in court.
