The Lincoln Saltdogs saw their seven game winning streak come to and end Tuesday, losing 8-7 to the St. Paul Saints in 12 innings after squandering a 6-2 lead in the seventh inning. It was a game that went back and forth all night until the 12th when the Saints put runners on second and third with one out, and after an intentional walk loaded the bases, Jacob Butler came home to score on a wild pitch by Brown.
In the top of the seventh, Lincoln had runners on second and third with two out. Shea McFeely grounded to second, but Tony Mansolino threw the ball away for an error that scored two runs. Brandon Jones followed with an RBI single to put the Saltdogs up 6-2.
St. Paul scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, and a solo home run by Jason Cooper leading off the eighth made it 6-5. Later in the inning, the Saints had two runners on with two out when Scott Knazek hit a fly ball to left-center. Lincoln center fielder Josh Burrus dropped the ball for error, scoring two runs and giving the Saints a 7-6 lead.
Lincoln tied it in the ninth with two outs and a man on first, McFeely lifted a fly ball to shallow left field. Shortstop Steve Butler, fighting a stiff breeze, failed to catch the ball cleanly, allowing pinch-runner Jake Jadlowski to score all the way from first and tie things up. McFeely was credited with an RBI double.
Saltdogs starter Jarrett Gardner, making his first start after throwing a no-hitter on Thursday, allowed four runs in 6.2 innings pitched and left the game in position to win. Reliever Daryl Arreola kept Lincoln in the game late, pitching three scoreless innings without allowing a hit. Offensively, McFeely finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Shawn McGill also finished with three hits. Phil Hawke hit a two-run home run, his seventh of the season, and Brandon Jones had a pair of singles to extend his hitting streak to eight games.
