To say there was a “Hayes” hanging over Rosenblatt Stadium would be an understatement. New Orleans’ Brett Hayes hit a two-out RBI single in the 13th inning off Omaha reliever Chris Hayes to give the visiting Zephyrs a 4-3 win Wednesday night.
There is no other team close to Omaha when it comes to one run and extra inning games. Omaha is 0-9 in extra-inning games and 7-20 in one run games. No other team has lost more than five games in extra innings.
Omaha starter Sidney Ponson, continued his rehabilitation allowing three runs on nine hits in six innings. Ponson is 0-1 with a 3.50 ERA in four rehab starts covering 18 innings. Ponson also gave up a home run to Hayes earlier in the game. Manager Mike Jirschele didn’t have much to say of Ponson’s performance other than he’s getting his work in.
Good news for starting pitcher Lenny DiNardo. He has been selected to play for the Pacific Coast League in the Class AAA All-Star Game against the International League on July 15 in Portland, Oregon. DiNardo, is 5-3 and with a 3.46 ERA, good for 9th in the PCL.
