Nebraska’s largest reservoir experienced an up-tick in the number of visitors over the Fourth of July holiday.
According to Ty Grafford with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Lake McConaughy saw increased numbers in the crowds over the holiday weekend. Grafford says Game and Parks estimated about 31,000 people per day over the Fourth of July holiday in 2008. Higher lake levels, lower fuel prices and great weather added up to an estimated 34,000 people per day this year.
The lake remains almost nine feet above its level at this time a year ago. In fact, Lake Mac reached its highest point in 2008 on June 20th. While Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District, who operates the lake, says that the lake level is holding steady, it is expected to begin dropping soon. Warmer temperatures and irrigation season will put a demand on the lake’s water, prompting Central to begin releasing large amounts of water.
