Scott Thorman’s fly out ended a bases loaded threat for Omaha in the eighth inning and Iowa tacked on an insurance run to beat the Royals 5-1 and earn a split against Omaha.
The Royals jumped on top in the first on a Tug Hulett solo home run. The Cubs tied it in the third and then went ahead on a double and two singles in the fourth to take the lead 3-1.
Iowa’s Casey Fossum went seven innings giving up five hits and striking out five. Other than Hulett’s homer, he never allowed a runner past second base. Brandon Duckworth threw six innings and gave up four runs while being charged with the loss, running his ERA to 5.67.
