The Nebraska Cornhuskers, picked to win the Big 12 North in a recent media poll, took center stage in Dallas, TX to open up three days of the Big 12 Football Media Event. Head coach Bo Pelini took to the podium and talked about his QB situation, improving on defense, and his outlook on the season. Listen to his press conference right here.
Pelini said no one has won the quarterback job yet, but Zac Lee came out of the spring as a front runner to the job. Pelini says he is a natural leader. Inexperience at the backup QB position has to be a concern. An ACL injury to Cody Spano set him back in the spring, but he is back at 100%. Cody Green was limited in spring ball, and it will be interesting to see how fast he can develop. Latravis Washington, is the fourth quarterback making the move from linebacker, but Pelini said, “There is enough talent there to get it done.”
As far as being picked as the number one team in the Big 12 north, he feels the teams doesn’t think they’re back, but they know there is a lot of work in front of them. Pelini says the key is to keep the players focused on the day to day process. Expectations are for the fans and media, he and team are just trying to get ready by not looking too far ahead.
Pelini is still stressing that his team is going to continue to get better at defense and that they are going to one day become a dominating defense. With so many spread offense schemes, Pelini likes his running backs and he said if you want to win championships, you have be physical and be able to run the football. The level of consistency wasn’t there last year.
Pelini says the team is not as close as he wants to be, but he says they’ll find out as the season goes on. He admits the Huskers are not as deep of a team as he would like, but they have a better chance to be a good football than they did in his first year.
