Two Nebraska National Guard soldiers who were killed two years ago while deployed in Iraq will be remembered this weekend in O’Neill. Sergeant Jacob Schmuecker of Norfolk and Specialist William Bailey of Bellevue were with the 755th Security Force.
Staff Sergeant Kenneth Stenka, with the Guard’s 754th Chemical Company, says the men will be honored during the dedication of the unit’s Memorial Statue at the O’Neill Armory. The plaque at the front of the statue is dedicated to the men. The statue itself is a life-size depiction of a soldier in bronze. Sergeant Stenka says many groups raised the money for the statue.
The 180-member 755th was deployed to active duty in September 2006 and was in Iraq for a year beginning in December, 2006. Stenka says Schmuecker was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq on July 21st, 2007, while Bailey was killed May 25th of the same year.
The statue dedication at the O’Neill National Guard Armory will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:00. A community social be held from noon-to-one.
