The Lincoln Saltdogs came up just short in their attempt to sweep Sioux Falls on Sunday, losing 5-4 in 11 innings at Haymarket Park. Lincoln tried to pull off their third straight eigthth inning rally tying the game at 4-4, but gave up the decisive run three innings later.
The rally started with two out. Phil Hawke was hit by a pitch and Pichi Balet and Rafael Alvarez each followed with base hits. That ended the night for Sioux Falls’ starting pitcher Jinio Gonzalez. Gavin Dickey greeted reliever Aaron Cotter with a deep drive to right field that appeared to clear the fence for a three-run homer; however, it was ruled that the ball hit the padded sign below the top of the fence before going over, giving Dickey a ground-rule double and an RBI. Shea McFeely did follow with an infield single to score Alvarez and tie the game at four.
With the game tied, Joe Anthonsen singled with one out against Matt Petrusek (1-1), and went to third on a bloop single by Tim Hutting. Cody Haerther followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Anthonsen with the winning run. Lincoln put the tying run on third with two out in the bottom of the eleventh, but Albenis Machado grounded out to end the game.
