Wayne State football was picked to finish third in the South Division and tied for fourth overall in the 2009 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference preseason coaches football poll.
The conference will have two, seven team divisions in football (North and South) this season with a 10-game league schedule. Each team will play 10 conference games that will count towards the NSIC Overall Champion as well as six divisional games that will count towards the NSIC North and South Division Championships.
The Wildcats (27 points) finished behind Minnesota State (35 points) and Augustana (28 points). Rounding out the South Division, Winona State (23), Southwest Minnesota State (16), Concordia, St. Paul (12) and Upper Iowa (6).
Senior quarterback Silas Fluellen was selected by coaches as the NSIC South Division Offensive Preseason Player of the Year for the second straight year. Last season, the Bellevue West graduate completed 222 of 375 passes (59.2%) for 2,902 yards and 16 touchdowns to earn NSIC First Team All-Conference honors.
