Nebraska Coach John Cook and 2009 co-captains Kori Cooper and Sydney Anderson talked at Media Day at the NU Coliseum. Cook is excited about the athleticism of this 2009 squad saying fans are going to see a different type of Husker team this season.
In the past, the Huskers have been known as a bigger, slower, up front team. Cook says this team will be much quicker. Also, a lot younger. Five freshmen join the team this season including High School Player of the Year Gina Mancuso from Papillion La-Vista.Cooper who is coming back from a major knee injury says the freshmen have jumped right in with a seamless transition. Cooper says the competition has been great and each of the younger girls bring a little something different to the team.
The Huskers do bring back five starters from last year’s team that went 31-3 and made it to the NCAA semifinals in Omaha, for the third time in four years. Cook said the goal again is to get back to Omaha…sight of regionals. Cook says he feels if this team can get to regionals, they can take the next step to Tampa. The Red/White Scrimmage is Sat. Aug. 22, at 7pm. You can get tickets at Huskers.com or calling 800-8-BIGRED .
