Nebraska redshirt freshmen quarterback Kody Spano tore his left ACL for the second time and will miss the entire 2009 football season. Head coach Bo Pelini says he expects Spano back in time for winter conditioning.
After practice, Pelini discussed options at the quarterback position with not a lot of experience coming in behind Zac Lee. “We have Cody Green and Latravis Washington and Taylor Martinez, We’ve brought Ron Kellogg Jr. back in too. We’ll be ok, those guys are all coming along. We wish Kody was with us, but he’s not. It’s part of the deal. I’m not worried about us, I’m worried about him. He’s worked his tail off to get back. I feel bad for him.”
I would have to think the #2 job would go to either Washington or Green. The move to slide Washington over from linebacker to signal caller may end up proving to be an even bigger move than when it was first announced. In an interview I had with Sean Callahan of HuskersIllustrated.com, he had suggested that the Huskers could even redshirt Washington this season to give him two full years as a potential starter. I would think any of those thoughts have been pushed aside.
The injury happened in non-contact drills. That was the same way he injured the ACL back in April during spring drills. The expected recovery time is about five months.
