Omaha pitcher Dusty Hughes outpitched Portland’s Josh Banks as the Royals won 1-0. Hughes (2-3) and Royals relievers Yasuhiko Yabuta and Chris Hayes held the Beavers scoreless with two hits and eight strikeouts. Omaha’s lone run came in the sixth inning when Irving Falu and Tug Hulett had back-to-back two-out doubles.
Hughes struck out four with three walks and two hits in 5.1 innings. Falu went 2 for 4, and Hulett was 1 for 3 with a walk and an RBI. It was nice to beat up on someone for once as the Royals turned the tables on the Beavers who have now lost eight in a row.
While the Royals have struggled in one run games with a record of just 12-27, they have recorded the most shutouts this season with their 16th of the season and second of this series.
