The USTA Boys National Tennis Championships wrapped up in Kalamazoo, Michigan this past weekend with Miami’s Austin Gonzales beating three Nebraska natives on his way to winning the title.
Gonzales beat Anthony Delcore of Omaha in the first round, and then took care of Omaha Burke junior Jackson Withrow in the semifinals and Lincoln native Jack Sock in the finals. Sock is the #1 boys player in the country. Withrow lost his third place match.
Sock lost 6-3, 5-7, 0-6 to Gonzales who was seeded 8th. The fourth seeded Withrow lost 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in the seminfinal. Sock is actually ranked No. 1 nationally in both the 16s and 18s.
Sock now lives in Kansas City where he trains. Sock missed out on his what would have been his fourth national championship in the past 16 months.
