Goals by Sarah Kendall and Emily Orbell gave the Creighton women’s soccer team its first victory of the 2009 season as they earned a 2-0 victory over South Dakota State Sunday afternoon at Fishback Soccer Park.
The Jays (1-0-1) moved to a perfect 6-0-0 all-time over the Jackrabbits (2-2-0), as they have yet to lose or tie a team from South Dakota. The Bluejays broke through for their first goal of the season with just over a minute remaining in the half. Kendall broke away down the right side and beat SDSU keeper Daniella Pappas, with an easy tap in the lower left corner.
The Bluejays pulled away from the Jackrabbits with their second goal at the 68:32 mark. After the Jays gained control near midfield, Beth Fyles drove the ball down the left side of the field. She then fed Orbell near the top-middle of the box as she struck a line drive shot just squirted through Pappas’ hands for the insurance tally.
Alicia Montgomery’s third career start resulted in her third shutout. Montgomery saved seven SDSU shots as she has allowed just one goal in her eight career games and three career starts.
SDSU will head to Iowa State on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. match against Iowa State. The Jays will be back at Morrison Stadium on Friday for a match with South Dakota as kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
