Here’s the thing with the Omaha Royals this season. They either shut out opponents like they did Tuesday, a league best 17 times. Or, they blow a lead in the ninth inning, a league worst ninth lost when leading after eight innings. Former Royal Gookie Dawkins hit a three run homer in the ninth for New Orleans 4-2 win. Omaha is 8-24in games decided in the final at bat.
Dawkins went 3 for 4 and drove in all four Zephyrs’ runs. He also had an RBI single in the seventh. Omaha starter Dusty Hughes went six innings, giving up just two hits, but needing to work around five walks. He also struck out nine. He had the Royals in position for a potential 18th shutout of the season until Chris Hayes gave up four runs on seven hits in three innings to take the loss.
