The Lincoln Saltdogs were in the driver’s seat with seven games to play. After last night’s 5-4 loss in 10 innings to Wichita, their third straight extra inning loss, the gap for the second half playoff spot as closed up a bit.
The Saltdogs still lead Wichita by 1.5 games and St. Paul by three with four to play. Wichita won the first half and even if they win the second half, Lincoln must hold off the Saints to make the playoffs.
Lincoln took a 4-3 lead in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Argelis Nuñez, but the Wingnuts again found a way to tie the game in the later innings. John Martin led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. He stole second and went to third on a throwing error on the play, and then scored on an RBI single by Brenan Herrera.
In the tenth, Lincoln reliever Matt Petrusek gave up a walk off homer to Wichita’s Greg Porter. Porter, a leading candidate for American Association Player of the Year, gave the Wingnuts their third straight walkoff win over the Saltdogs.
The Saltdogs open a four-game series at Sioux Falls Thursday night at 7:05. Righty Tim Brown will make the start for Lincoln.
