Greg Wunderlich threw for three touchdowns, and Duane Bowen ran for two more as the UNO football team opened the 2009 season with a 48-0 win over East Central University. The Mavericks allowed the Tigers just 63 yards of total offense and four first downs.
Wunderlich hit Brian Miller with a nine-yard pass just 4:08 into the game. UNO was in the end zone just 14 seconds later. Jason Zabka picked off a pass from East Central’s Marcus Johnson on the first play from scrimmage and ran the ball back 42-yards to make it 14-0. The Mavericks capped aan 80-yard drive when Robert Wesley finished it off with a five-yard touchdown run to make it 21-0 UNO.
The second quarter started much as the first quarter did. The Mavs went back to the air and Wunderlich found Mike Higgins alone down the near sideline. Higgins dove in for the touchdown as UNO covered 66 yards in just four plays. He led all Maverick receivers with 70 yards.
Wunderlich picked up his third touchdown of the game with 5:13 left in half. He hit Austin Wells with a 23-yard pass to make it 35-0 UNO at the break. At that point, the Mavs had rolled up 277 yards of offense and 19 first downs while holding the Tigers to just 30 yards and only two first downs.
Bowen, in his UNO debut, scored from a yard out after the Mavericks had intercepted a batted ball on the Tigers’ first possession. The score came just 3:37 into the quarter. Bowen added a nine-yard TD run later in the quarter. Wunderlich finished the night with 12 completions on 15 attempts for 183 yards. He also had a ten-yard run. Bowen led all UNO rushers with 90 yards.
