Royals’ pitcher Dusty Hughes gave up just one run in eight innings on two hits and a walk while striking out seven as Omaha won the first game of its final home series, with a 3-1 win over the Iowa Cubs.
Hughes gave up a home run to Micah Hoffpauir to lead off the second inning. Hughes retired 12 of his first 13 hitters. Trailing 1-0, Omaha took the lead with a three run sixth inning on a Cory Aldridge RBI double and two run single from JR House.
Another Omaha pitcher received a season honor. Lenny DiNardo was named as one of two starting pitchers on the 2009 All-PCL team. The left-hander is the first Royal to be named to the post-season All-Star squad since 2005. DiNardo is 10-5 so far this season with one start remaining, and his 3.33 ERA ranks fifth in the league. He’s second with 126 strikeouts. He has also been involved in five of the Royals 18 shutouts this year.
