The former State Senator known for changes he made to the state’s education system has died. Ron Raikes of Omaha died Saturday in a farming accident in Saunders County. He reportedly was caught in a haybuster and was found by a neighbor. The former Senator from the Omaha area was 66 years old. Raikes served in the legislature from 1997 until last year when he was term limited out. Governor Dave Heineman issued a statement.
Gov. Heineman said, “Senator Ron Raikes was a friend and an outstanding state senator. He cared deeply about the education of our children and he will be missed. Sally and I send our deepest condolenses to Helen and to the Raikes family. They are in our thoughts and prayers.”
