The Creighton women’s soccer team kept its player of the week streak alive as Kelly Connolly was named the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Connolly started both games on the backline, helping the Bluejays secure their third straight shutout and fourth straight win. She played more minutes then any Bluejay defender (136 minutes) and recorded three shots in two matches.
In the Akron contest, Connolly helped the defense hold the Zips without a shot in the first half. The Jays have now had three straight matches in which they have gone a whole half without allowing a shot.
Connolly has two points on one goal this season and is one of four Bluejays to start all nine matches. It is also the fourth straight week the Jays have had at least one player honored by The Valley.
In addition to Connolly’s honor, the team moved up to seventh in the NSCAA Great Lakes Regional rankings. The Bluejays made a two-spot jump from ninth in last week’s rankings. The Jays moved ahead of Minnesota and Wisconsin, who are both 4-2-1 and Eastern Michigan, who is 4-1-1.
Purdue holds the top spot in the rankings, followed by five other Big Ten schools (Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan State, Illinois and Iowa. The Jays next match will be on Friday at home against Arizona State. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Morrison Stadium.Story courtesy of CU athletics.
