I’m not sure what happened on that 81 yard pass that gave Virginia Tech first and goal at the three, whether Anthony West shouldn’t have peeled off of Tech receiver Danny Coale or the safety didn’t come to help out, regardless that set up the eventually game winner. Pelini was not about to point the finger at just one player.
Defensive linemen Ndamukong Suh said the defense was rattled by the long play either. Give credit to Tyrod Taylor, he scrambled for his life back there and third down and the secondary held close to the receivers as long as they could. Virginia Tech made the play when they needed to.
That 81 yard play sticks out as the play that turned the game around, but you can always go back and look at missed opportunities earlier in the game.
