West Holt Memorial Hospital in the north-central Nebraska town of Atkinson will soon become a fully-managed facility under Sanford Health, based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. West Holt’s C-E-O Michael Coyle says it is a great opportunity for the small hospital.
Coyle says the contract provides more levels of guidance of the staff and board of directors. He says the nine-member board will still control the hospital, just under the guidance of Sanford. The hospital has been in an associate status with Sanford since 2000 but will change over October first.
Coyle says the full association opens up a vast pool of resources. “Even though we’re three hours away, it allows us to have a one-stop shop in Sanford and the patients are really going to notice the change,” Coyle says. “Things that we were waiting for before, we won’t have to wait for any longer.”
West Holt has eighteen beds and offers twenty four hour emergency services. Coyle says the doctors are also looking forward to the collaboration with Sanford Health. He says it’s a smaller staff, with only three M-Ds and two mid-levels, so they often feel like they’re on an island, due to their location.
“When we can pick up the phone, get a few questions answered and immediately pass that information on to our patients, that’s fantastic,” Coyle says. “This relationship’s going to help us provide better care.” Coyle says the association will help assure the long term survival of their hospital and clinic.
