A comprehensive study of state and local taxes is on the agenda today for the Revenue Committee of the Nebraska Legislature, which will meet in Bloomfield. The legislation is sponsored by Senator Cap Dierks of Ewing, who says much of the push is due to pressure on property taxes.
“The only relief is to either increase sales or income tax because the need for the money doesn’t go away with these bills,” Dierks says. “The only thing that change is, it’s a tax shift.”
Dierks says he also wants to talk about another bill he sponsored that would bring about major changes in the state tax-collection process. “This just about does rewrite the whole system but mostly, we just have it out there for discussion,” he says.
Also on the meeting agenda are bills that would study the source of state and local taxes, and also look at the sales and use tax. The committee will meet at the Bloomfield Community Center at 1:30 PM.
