I actually find this quite comical how we in the media keep pressing on and on about when the Nebraska defense will get their Black Shirts. After practice yesterday, someone bravely asked head coach Bo Pelini if he had a timetable as to when we could see the Black Shirts.
Pelini gave a short “No, next question” answer. OK. The Huskers rank second in the country in scoring defense and 13th in the country in overall defense. Just a day ago, Nebraska defensive coordinator Carl Pelini said he thinks the defense should get their Black Shirts based on those numbers. However, we’ll wait until Bo is ready. Safety Larry Asante said the defense played well against Missouri, but didn’t put a whole game together. He says perhaps once the team can pull that off, maybe they’ll get the Black Shirts.
More recognition for defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. He won the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday, then picked up Big 12 Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors on Monday. Suh had six tackles, including a six-yard sack and that fourth-quarter interception when NU was down 12-7. Suh also added a forced fumble, three quarterback hurries and a pass breakup and received high praise from Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel.
He said Suh was the best defensive tackle he has seen in his nine years in the Big 12 and he had Ziggy Hood on his team last year who was a first round draft pick this year by the Pittsburgh Steelers. A great compliment coming from the Missouri coach.
