We may hear something today on the status of junior linebacker Blake Lawrence who suited up against Texas Tech, but missed a couple of practices. He hasn’t played in three and the past four games and has had some concussions in the past year. Running back Roy Helu wore the green non-contact jersey and wide receiver Chris Brooks did not practice.
Finish plays and capitalize on opportunities. That’s what Carl Pelini has been preaching to his defense this week as they prepare for the multi-talent Iowa State quarterback Austin Arnaud who can beat you with his arm and his legs. Iowa State is using their QB to run in more of a wildcat type formation and he looks a little more comfortable in the pocket then from a year ago when the Huskers won last year 35-7 at Iowa State.
Nebraska had an interesting guest stop by the Huskers practice field yesterday. Former Pittsburgh Steeler great Mean Joe Greene was in Lincoln scouting the Huskers for the Steelers and after practice, defensive coordinator Carl Pelini said Mean Joe took time to talk with the team. Pelini said Greene’s message was strong and he was really impressed with the way Greene took time to talk with the players.
Now, you know Mean Joe Greene was in that famous Coke commercial in the 70’s, so someone had to ask Pelini, did anyone offer Mean Joe a Coke? You know the commercial where he’s hobbling down tunnel and the kid give Joe the bottle of coke and he’s guzzling it down and then throws the kid his jersey? That commercial was actually filmed at the old Texas Stadium in Dallas.
