You can bet ball control would be one of the main topics covered in yesterday’s practice and that’s exactly what the Huskers did Monday. All of the running backs worked on hanging on to the football, a problem that has been growing ever since the Missouri game.
Once again the question had to be asked to Husker running backs coach Tim Beck. Did Roy Helu’s shoulder stinger play a part in his two fumbles? Beck responded the same as he did the other day, saying, “My answer was, he played against Texas Tech and didn’t have any turnovers.”
OK, so if you take the coaching staff on their word that Helu’s shoulder was not bothering him, then their play calling was idiotic for only giving Helu five touches. Something is not adding up there. I’m concerned Helu’s health is an issue and the running game is ultimately going to suffer.
On the injury front, defensive end Pierre Allen and wide receiver Chris Brooks both sat out practice. Pelini provides an update on those two players. We’ll find out this weekend if the Huskers game against Oklahoma on November 7th will be picked up by ABC for a 2:30 or 7pm kick, or if it will be a morning kick to air on Versus like this Saturday’s game with Baylor .
