The Governor told WNAX Radio last week that he was looking at a combination of cuts.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that there will be an across-the-board cut of some nature but we’re specifically looking at education budgets, Medicaid, the Beatrice State Developmental Center, several issues like that more specifically and probably more targeted because of the different requirements in those agencies.”
After hearing the quote, Senator Heath Mello of Omaha became concerned that the Governor may make a cut in the Beatrice State Developmental Center’s budget.
At a news conference we asked the Governor if it was true he would make cuts to education, BSDC, and Medicare.
The Governor responded, ““The fact of the matter is…we all anticipated that we would lose federal funds on June 30. We didn’t lose those funds until the end of September. That’s about a 6 million dollar savings. That’s what we are talking about there. We are not talking about impacting the operations of BSDC. Beyond that, I would just say, that everything is on the table now…as we try to anticipate how we are going to adjust our budgets.”
The Governor has said he does not want to solve this budget hole by raising taxes.
The Special Session starts November 4th.
