Consumers are being warned of a fraudulent email being circulated, claiming to be from the FDIC. The email says that your bank has failed and the FDIC has taken control of your banks assets. It then directs you to click on a website and perform a series of steps in order to check your deposit insurance coverage.
An email from the real FDIC says they’ve become aware of these fraudulent emails and wants people to consider the intent of the email as a malicious attempt to collect personal or confidential information, some of which may be used to gain unauthorized access to online banking services or to conduct identity theft.
The FDIC says people should not access the web site in the email or download any files from it. The FDIC is attempting to identify the source of the emails and disrupt the transmission.
