Nebraska State Senator Heath Mello of Omaha is reminding us that the legislature not only has to find a way to fill the $335 million dollar budget hole, but they also have to look to the future and prevent even larger deficits. Mello reminds us if changes aren’t made we are looking at a $500 million dollar budget deficit in the 2011 budget year. The Senator says he is not only thinking about the special session, but is also looking ahead to January.
“And so new spending bills – it’s going to be very difficult to see those being passed only because we’re going to continue the budget cutting not just through special session, and not just through next legislative session, but probably into 2011.”
The special session starts November 4th.
