The Union that represents more than 10-thousand state employees is throwing their support behind Senator Bill Averys bill to furlough workers instead of eliminate nearly 400 positions, which is suggested in the Governors economic recovery plan. Julie Dake Able is head of the Union and says there’s not much fat left to cut in state government
“There were small cuts in Beatrice over long periods of time and it resulted in federal sanctions so we can ill afford to male those kind of cuts now, cuts that are going to become permanent and put us in a long term crisis situation”
One option for furloughs would be to stagger the days off. Another suggestion also supported by the union is to shut down many State Government offices for a day, saying that would also save on utility costs.
