Doane and Bellevue volleyball opened up pool play in the NAIA national volleyball tournament with losses in their first matches. Each team will play three matches against others within their respective pools. Winners of those pools move onto the national finals this weekend, also being held in Sioux City, IA.
The 10th ranked University of Texas at Brownsville beat No. 16 Bellevue University 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-20). With the loss, Bellevue fell to 29-8 on the season. Junior Jaclyn Thorson was the lone Bruin in double figures with 10 kills. Senior Rachel Muller added eight kills and three digs in the loss. The Bruins continue pool play action on Wednesday with a 5:45 p.m. match against fourth-ranked Concordia (Calif.) University.
College of Idaho rallied from a first set 23-25 loss to defeat Doane 25-20, 25-18, 25-16. Doane was limited to a .073 hitting percentage in the loss and were led offensively by Jessy Liver’s seven kills. Doane takes on Azusa Pacific tonight at 8 p.m.
